Fire at Trincity Industrial Estate now Contained

Tuesday July 05, 2011 – 3:15 p.m.

Fire at Trincity Industrial Estate now contained

The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS) has contained the fire to the plastic factory which occurred this morning at Tissue Drive, Trincity Industrial Estate. At this time, the fire has not been fully extinguished, however damping down operations are ongoing. There is no immediate threat to the neighbouring buildings and establishments.

Emergency first responders remain on the scene and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) has cordoned off Tissue Drive, only allowing controlled access until full sterilisation of the area has been completed. However, traffic on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway is flowing steadily in both directions.

Due to the change in wind direction, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service has also advised that persons living in extremely close proximity to the site should stay away until it is fully extinguished. Moreover, it is recommended that AC units of the buildings or residences in close proximity remain off to prevent fumes from entering.

The Environment Management Authority (EMA) has been contacted to assess the environmental impact of this fire.
