ANNUAL REGIONAL TSUNAMI EXERCISE
ANNUAL REGIONAL TSUNAMI EXERCISE
Tomorrow, Thursday 23rd March 2023, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) will participate in the annual regional tsunami exercise, CARIBE WAVE. The purpose of this exercise is to improve Tsunami Warning System effectiveness in the Caribbean and adjacent regions and aims to stimulate the development, training, testing and evaluation of Disaster Response Plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for a tsunami threat.
During the exercise, the ODPM, which is the National Tsunami Warning Centre for Trinidad and Tobago, will issue applicable tsunami alert levels, such as warnings and watches to several stakeholders, utilising various methods of communication, which include email, SMS, automated voice calls, WhatsApp messages and two-way radio.
Various agencies and stakeholders will be engaged in a variety of tsunami drills and exercises. The public is advised to expect these activities and messages and no action will be required by non-participating persons. It is only a drill and Trinidad and Tobago is NOT currently under any tsunami threat or warning.
