OFFICIAL STATEMENT #3  TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMS OVER THE CENTRAL TROPICAL ATLANTIC

The low-pressure system in the central tropical Atlantic that the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) has been closely monitoring has now developed a well-defined centre of circulation and maintained enough organised deep convection to be classified as a tropical depression by the National Hurricane Center, Miami.

At 11.00 pm on Wednesday 19th August 2020, the centre of Tropical Depression Thirteen was located near 14.6N 47.9W, about 1670 km ESE of the northern Leeward Islands. The system is moving toward the west-northwest near 31 km/h and this motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

Current analyses suggest that on its projected track, the centre of the system is forecast to move near or north of the northern Leeward Islands by late Friday 21st August 2020. Maximum sustained winds are near 55 km/h with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast and the system is expected to transition to a tropical storm by later today, Thursday 20th August 2020.

At this time, the system poses no direct threat to Trinidad and Tobago or Grenada and its dependencies.

The TTMS will continue to closely monitor this system and will issue an update at 6:00 am today or earlier if the situation warrants. As always, pay close attention to information being issued by the TTMS by visiting www.metoffice.gov.tt, downloading our mobile app (search: TT Met Office) and following us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
