CARIBE WAVE 2018 - BE A PARTICIPANT!
The ODPM will be partaking in an annual drill CARIBE WAVE (Caribbean Tsunami Warning Exercise). This is a tsunami exercise held annually in the Caribbean, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, under the direction of UNESCO and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The purpose of the CARIBE WAVE exercise is to improve the effectiveness of the Tsunami Warning System along the Caribbean coast. The objectives of the CARIBEWAVE Exercise are to test and evaluate the operations of the Caribbean Tsunami Warning System (Caribe EWS), to validate preparedness response to a tsunamis (which are test protocols and communications systems between tsunami warning centers and the tsunami warning focal points), and the use of the PTWC (Pacific Tsunami Warning Center) enhanced tsunami products for the Caribbean, as well as assist in tsunami preparedness efforts of the emergency management agencies in those areas.
The Tsunami Exercise Caribe Wave 18 will have three scenarios: Barbados, Colombia and Puerto Rico. All scenarios will start, with one dummy message, at 1400 UTC (time of the earthquake) and the 1st message for each of the three scenarios will be 5 minutes later (1405 UTC). It is important to remark that each Member State will selects one scenario and that PTWC only will send simulated products for the selected scenario to the primary TWFP and NTWC of that Member State.
On Thursday 15th March 2018, the ODPM will be testing protocols, standing operating procedures and other internal processes in our response to an oncoming tsunami triggered by an earthquake. Be apart of this exercise by testing your home, business, church, school or social network.
