As a hurricane approaches land, several factors combine to cause a rise in the sea level. This is called a storm surge. The actual formation begins over the deep ocean. The conditions around the hurricane‘s eye cause a rise of sea surface one or two feet higher than the surrounding ocean‘s surface. This forms a dome of water as much as 50 miles across.
