Preparing for a hurricane
- Trim tall trees that are close to homes and electrical wires
- Remove unused building material and tools from around the house - go hazard hunting
- Clean guttering and drains on a regular basis
- Assemble a first aid kit , food and water to last for at least seven days
- Assemble an emergency kit that would contain small tools like plastic sheeting, rain gear, blankets, work gloves, flash lights, boots, tools, portable radio and batteries.
- Secure all important documents like your passport, marriage certificates, birth certificates, deed, in an air-tight bag
- Identify an alternative place to stay like by a friend or relative and ensure your family knows this in the event you cannot be found at home
If you live in low-lying areas it is best you get to a safe spot or stay with a friend during periods of heavy rainfall.
If you are wheel-chaired bound, stay in it. Move to cover, if possible, lock your wheels, and protect your head.
During a hurricane
- Remain calm and stay out of danger
- Stay indoors and away from windows (flying objects can become missiles)
- Beware of the eye of the storm, it is a false calm
- Listen to your radio
After a hurricane
- Check for missing persons. Tell the Police/Fire services right away if someone is missing
- Stay clear of down electric lines. Contact the utility
- Do not go sight-seeing
- Boil water unless told it is safe
- Attend to the injured and special population like the elderly, children and the visibly impaired
- Do not use food from flood water
- Listen to your radio
