STRENGTHENING DISASTER RISK MANAGEMENT FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

On Tuesday 26th January 2021, officials of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) were invited by representatives of the Mayaro/Rio Claro Regional Corporation’s (MRCRC) Disaster Management Unit (DMU) to handover (3) wheelchairs to differently-abled persons in their region.

The ODPM was approached by the MRCRC’s DMU to assist its burgess who were desperately in need of wheel chairs. The ODPM through its stakeholder network was able to source the equipment.  As such, in conducting their hazard and vulnerability assessments, the MRCRC DMU officials were able to identify 3 recipients.

ODPM’s Planning and Development Officer Anwar Baksh, Corporate Communications Officer Donneyal Farray-Comma joined representatives from the MRCRC’s DMU which included Field Officers Savitri Mohammed, Shaun Kalipersad and Communication Technician Boniek Ramoutar in presenting the wheelchairs to Mitra Rampaulsingh, Ceon Charles and Brian Ghany. The recipients graciously thanked both the Corporation and the ODPM for assisting them.

The ODPM continues to work with responder agencies such as the Municipal Corporations, the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services and the Ministry of Health to provide support to the vulnerable members of our society. Together we can ensure those who are differently-abled are better prepared for a disaster.    #BeReadyTT    #ODPMTT
