ODPM CONTINUES ASSESSMENTS OF THE PIPARO MUD VOLCANO

On Friday 25th September 2020, the ODPM along with the UWI Petroleum Studies Unit (UWI PSU) conducted another site visit to the Piparo Mud Volcano. During the visit, the ODPM’s Regional Coordinators Eric Mackie and Navindra Persad as well as the UWI PSU’s Senior Geoscientist, Xavier Moonan, undertook observations on and around the dome of the mud volcano. Mr Moonan noted that although the mud volcano continues to produce low-intensity, rumbling noises it is relatively quiet with 4-5 emissions having been observed within the two hour period of the visit. These signs he indicated were normal activity and concluded that the volcano is dormant at this time. It was also noted that there were no new signs of movement of the mud volcano’s dome. The ODPM and the UWI PSU continue to conduct these critical periodic assessments as part of the monitoring aspect of the Piparo Mud Volcano Response Plan.
