JUNE 1 of this year was officially declared the Disaster Preparedness Month by the Minister of National Security Senator the Honourable Martin Joseph.
Minister Joseph was speaking at the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management’s launch of its first ever Disaster Preparedness Month.
This event took place at the Cascadia Hotel, St Ann’s and it was an opportunity for ODPM to unveil aspects of its public education campaign.
The launch also demonstrated the support the ODPM received from the UNDP through its resident representative Dr Marcia DeCastro. Dr De Castro spoke to the many ways in which the UN supports disaster preparedness educational efforts.
One of the main elements of the public education campaign was the announcement of a primary schools’ tour, which utilized the services of personalities Nikki Crosby and Mairoon Ali.
Together with the ODPM they came up with a story that informed children of the do’s and don’ts of disaster preparedness. The schools’ tour also featured the use of the UN/ISDR conceived Riskland game.
