SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE
10 a.m.
ODPM ON ALERT AS RIVERS CONTINUE TO RISE
The Meteorological Service has reported (Severe Weather Bulletin No 1 of 6th December 2006) that Trinidad and Tobago experienced overnight and early morning showers. The showers will continue today and may lead to street/flash flooding with accompanying gusty winds.
Reports from the Water Resources Agency have indicated that several rivers have risen overnight due to the heavy rainfalls. The Caroni system is the main area of concern, more so within the vicinity of the El Carmen and the Caroni/Tumpuna region. The water levels are high and once there continues to be significant rainfall, there will be the possibility of flooding.
Another area of concern at this time is the Caparo River between Todds Road and Ravin Sable. Again, if there is significant rainfall, flooding will occur.
No reports of flooding have been received by the ODPM. However, the National and Local level Response Mechanisms have all been alerted.
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management wishes to advise the public that severe weather and flooding can still occur and persons should continue to be on the alert and prepared even though the Hurricane season has passed.
The ODPM and the Emergency Services continue to monitor the situation and will continue to advise the public as necessary.
