Sea Disturbance off Radix Point, Trinidad

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management wishes to advise the public that the sea disturbance off Radix Point, Trinidad is being monitored and investigated at this time.
Since receiving reports of this activity several initiatives have been undertaken.
- The UWI Seismic Research Unit (SRU) undertook an aerial reconnaissance of the area on Monday, July 23, 2007. This was facilitated by ODPM and the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago. Following this a report on the situation was submitted by Dr Richard Robertson, head of SRU, which recommended that further investigation be conducted.
- The Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Radio League (TTARL) also conducted a reconnaissance by boat of the activity on Monday, July 23, 2007.
- The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force/Coast Guard has been monitoring the area.
- The Maritime Services Division of the Ministry of Works and Transport has been issuing safety advisories to mariners. They have indicated that vessels proceed with caution.
- The Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago undertook an aerial reconnaissance of the area of activity today, which was also facilitated by the ODPM and the Special Anti Crime Unit. GSTT is in the process of putting together a report, which will be submitted to the ODPM.
Follow up activities
The TTARL together with UWI SRU will be undertaking additional investigations by sea on Saturday, July 28, 2007. The Institute of Marine Affairs is on stand-by in the analysis of water and sediment samples.
The ODPM will continue to coordinate and advise the public when necessary of any developments.
